Accessing water in underground aquifers by drilling a hole in the
ground. The hole is then lined with pipes and screens.
Well decommissioning is performed when a well has become unusable.
The well is plugged to prevent contamination of the aquifer. Examples
of wells that need to be plugged include those that have collapsed
casing due to corrosion, wells in the path of new construction or
those that have been abandoned (old farm yards).
Dewatering occurs when a cased well is drilled and the water is
pumped out for the purpose of facilitating construction, protecting an
aquifer or to ensure mining operations continue without restriction.
